Tips To Spruce Up Your Home’s Curb Appeal

So many of us are spending more time at home these days and home projects have become more of a hot topic. According to Business of Home, home renovation projects have risen over the past six months and upgrades to your home’s exterior have been a big part of this. The exterior of your home is your home’s first impression that welcomes others. Here are some small touches and bigger investments that can be done to the exterior that will give your home it’s wow factor.

Small Touches

Dress up the hardware

Simple little touches like this can go a long way. Many homes have their house number displayed on the front. Something that is passed by every day and probably just ignored. A new or interesting style such as slim mid-century modern digits or hand-painted tiles can give your home a custom look. If you love the color of your door or have already tackled that project, then changing the door handle can give you an instant new look. Go a step further and add a matching door knocker.

Add outdoor art

When thinking of outdoor art, it should be done tastefully. Avoid the garden gnomes or kitschy metal animals. Outdoor art is a great way to set your house apart from your neighbors. You do not have to spend big bucks on some famous art sculpture. There are many online handmade marketplaces with nice original pieces. If you are crafty, then go to a thrift store or yard sale and repurpose items. Items can include things like a glass mobile to catch the sunlight or a birdbath for a centerpiece of your front garden.

Pile on the plants

Using different plants and different colored flowers can create a garden layered look. Window planters can also frame your front door and give your house an updated look. Another great place for a window box is around the mailbox.

Disguise unsightly items

No one wants to see your AC unit next to your nice welcoming home. A good way to hide them is to plant shrubs around the units. When doing this, you need to stay several feet away so the airflow is not obstructed. Also, remember to leave room for easy access to repair and maintenance.

Big Interventions

Replace your gutters

Whenever we think of our home’s gutters we think of cleaning them out. This is an update that is a lot of times overlooked. Not only do gutters serve a purpose but they also are an aesthetic addition. Many companies offer tons of colors and can be customized for your home’s paint colors and style.

Give the facade a deep clean

If you think about it, the exterior of your home endures environmental elements all year round. Just pressure washing the exterior and removing built-up dirt, grime and mold can do wonders. There are two types of ways to do this. Power-washing uses heated water and pressure-washing which uses normal water. These machines can be rented or purchased. If you are hesitant about the job, call in a pro.

Rethink your exterior lighting

Like your front garden, take a layered approach. Spotlights can light up key areas of your outdoor space. Task lighting close to the entry such as recessed lighting or wall sconces can also highlight your home’s welcoming features. Lighting your front walkway with solar lighting is also inviting. Overall accent lighting can highlight your home’s best architectural features and create ambiance.

Add a border to your driveway

Edging your driveway is a great way to elevate the entrance of your home. Two great things to use to do this are plants and hardscapes. You will want to use materials that compliment the exterior of your home and the surrounding landscape. A quaint cottage would work best with a low maintenance border with evergreens. You want to make the entrance of your home stand out.
