May 26, 2014 – Bedico Creek Preserve, one of the fastest growing Master Planned Communities in St. Tammany Parish, has just announced the opening of the newest private Disc Golf Course in the state. The new course takes advantage of more than 600 acres of green space in the community and has nine holes of play teeing off at the Bedico Creek Rod & Paddle Club.  The club features a lakeside party pavilion, fishing pier and the new community swimming pool (which also opened in May). Bedico Creek’s disc golf course has paved cart paths, undulating terrain, water hazards, and all the challenges associated with a traditional golf course.

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf.  Golf ball and clubs are replaced with a professional grade flying disc or Frisbee® created especially for the game.  Professional players use 9 or more discs and beginners usually have one driver for long distance, one for intermediate play, and one putter disc.  Like traditional golf, the sport shares the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (in this case, the fewest throws). The golf disc is thrown from the tee area, down a fairway, and into an elevated metal basket to complete the hole.

In the 1970s, as courses began popping up around the country, players formed the PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) to help oversee the rapid growth of the sport.  Today the PDGA is a growing worldwide organization with international and national championship events held annually.
